Health Pick: No Fluoride

I decided to do more research on fluoride and go into more depth on the topic. In my research I found whole books written on the topic of fluoride. The fist thing that caught my attention, was that fluoride was used in rat poison at one time.  There have been reports in human studies that found that prenatal fluoride was linked to fetal brain damage. Fluoride accumulates in the pineal gland and was found to increase puberty in children.  In the 20th century fluoride was prescribed by doctors to reduce thyroid function for those with an over active thyroid.

There is evidence of increased bone breaks and fractures found in children that were exposed to high levels of fluoride. I took a notice to more kids breaking more bones about two summers ago. When I heard that kids were breaking bones on the bouncy houses, I then started to question what is going on. This goes hand in hand with hip fractures for the elderly, but its not just the elderly anymore. There are thirty year old people that are getting hip replacements. It really shows you there is a problem with bone health, when you see knee replacement commercials.

In double blind studies people that were exposed to fluoride had reported problems of fatigue, gastro intestinal tract problems, headaches and rashes. There are also links to reducing the function of the kidneys. There is defiantly a huge problem because there are now businesses devoted just to dialysis. There has to be a created problem to have a money making solution.

Fluoride can increase the intake of lead into the blood system. Lead is also found in tap water from erosion of pipes and other sources. There are solutions; to reduce lead use only cold water for cooking and drinking. Let your cold water run for 60 to 90 seconds before you use it for consumption. A way to reduce fluoride and lead toxins, is iodine. There is a list below of bottled waters that have very low levels of fluoride or no fluoride at all.

Health Pick: How Much Protein Should I Have?

This is a follow up to yesterdays blog about eating less meat products for a protein source. I wanted to put a list together of other sources of protein besides meat. The first thing that comes to mind when you think of protein, is meat. There are so many food sources that provide protein.

To figure out how much protein you should get in a day, you take your weight and multiply it by .37 to see how much your daily intake should be. ( Example- 200 Lbs. x .37 = 74 grams of protein)  Protein makes up about 16 percent of our total body weight.

Getting an accurate amount of protein is essential to good health. It is especially important for those who are pregnant. An important thing to remember is the amount of protein in food changes when something is cooked. ( Example- the reduction of spinach when it is cooked. )

My favorite source of protein is Spirulina and it has 3 to 4 times more protein than beef and fish. Below is a comparison list of meat and plant based foods and their protein content.

Amount of Protein in Meat

8oz Steak - 45g protein

8oz Chicken Breast- 42g protein

8oz Whole Milk- 10g protein

8oz Salmon - 45g protein

8oz Pork Chop - 55g protein

Amount of Protein in Plant Based Foods

1 cup Quinoa - 18g protein

1 cup Kidney Beans - 13g protein

1 cup Tofu - 20g protein

1 cup Soy Milk - 7g protein

1 cup Peas - 16g protein

1 cup Corn - 5g protein

1 cup Broccoli - 3g protein

1 cup Chickpeas - 14g protein

1 cup Avocado- 4g protein

Health Pick: White Willow Bark

www.solaray.com

I have been using Solaray White Willow Bark for about three years now as needed . (Not while pregnant)  I take the capsules and it has been very effective. White Willow Bark is a tree and has been used since 400 B.C. This is good for headaches, breaking fevers, reducing pain and swelling in joints. Many people use Willow Bark instead of aspirin and ibuprofen because they can irritate the lining of the stomach and colon.

White Willow Bark is is not recommended for individuals under the age of 16; as with any aspirin. It is not recommended for pregnant women. This has been used for the flu, a mild pain reliever and menstrual cramps. White Willow Bark can be purchased in capsule and powdered form. The price range is between $5.00 and $8.00.

Health Pick: Milk Yogurt Good For Your Health!

This review is for cow milk based yogurt and not for soy milk yogurt. The soy milk yogurt does not have natural occurring calcium and a calcium additive is added to the yogurt. Soy yogurt does not have the same amount of vitamins as yogurt made from cows milk.

Yogurt has calcium, protein, riboflavin, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12. If your taking antibiotcs yogurt can help with replenishing your good gut bacteria. There are many different amounts of fat in yogurt. You can find non-fat, low-fat and whole milk yogurt. Milk yogurt contains lactobacteria; the most common type known as acidophilus. The good bacteria in yogurt helps digest food and prevents stomach infections. This is a healthy bacteria for the colon and can reduce colon cancer and colon related diseases.

There have been studies that have found that low fat yogurt can promote weight loss. Yogurt can improve your immune system. It stimulates white blood cells in the blood to fight off infection. The yogurt has anti-tumor effects as well. Yogurt can also reduce high blood pressure. Other studies done show that yogurt can reduce cholesterol.

Eating yogurt helps the absorption of calcium and B-vitamins. Yogurt has a balance of of protein, fat and carbohydrates. Yogurt is a healing food for diarrhea. It helps with healing the lining of the colon. It can help with indigestion as well. It helps prevent yeast infections. For the same portion of milk as yogurt you can get more calcium in your body from yogurt than milk.

You want to eat fresh Organic yogurt that is stored in the refrigerator. The heat treated yogurt kills the live active cultures. To receive the best health benefits the cultures must be live and active.

Health Pick: Wheat Grass

Wheat Grass, that grass that you see sitting on the counter at many juicing establishments. The first place I noticed this grass, was on the counter at Jamba Juice. It took me a while to warm up to Wheat Grass. I would walk up to counter and examine the Wheat Grass with my eyes very closely and watch the juicing process of it. I would hear people in line talking about how they would feel more energized after having a shot of it. I started to get an ounce shot, only when I felt really low in energy. I have been using Wheat Grass consistently for about three years now.

I use the Amazing Grass Brand, it is 100% Organic. It is in a powdered form. It is best to refrigerate after opening to keep all the nutrients. There are many benefits of Wheat Grass, like cleansing and detoxing the body. It helps balance pH levels. Wheat Grass has natural antioxidants that repair damaged cells. It also gives your immune system a boost.

I purchased my Wheat Grass at Whole Foods. It can also be found online and health food stores. The price ranges between $19.99- $25.00. One 8.5 ounce container will last for at least a month.

There are many diseases that Wheat Grass has been used in treatment and prevention. These are Anemia, Cancer, Colitis, Diabetes,  High Blood Pressure and Wound Healing. It also removes drugs, metals and toxins. Above in the video, it provides more detailed information about nutrition and more benefits of Wheat Grass.

As always consult with your Medical/Health Adviser before trying or using any new herbal remedy. This is for informational purposes only, not to treat or cure any diseases.

Foodie Pick: Shiitake Mushroom

Shiitake Mushrooms

This is a self made recipe that was inspired by a dish that I had at a restaurant. I had one of those moments of sitting there and said, " Oh this would be so good if it had this and that." I made the recipe the following week and it was so good. I miss having this recipe while pregnant. The Shiitake Mushrooms can cause a little stomach discomfort for some (Looking at husband). I myself did not experience this.

Shiitake Mushrooms are great. They have great health benefits of reducing cholesterol, strengthens immune system, prevents cancer, prevents thrombosis (blood clots) and aids in weight loss. There is a lot of nutrients vitamins B2,  B3, B5, B6, Manganese, Phosphorus, Fiber, Potassium, Selenium, Zinc, Copper, Vitamin D and Magnesium.

Shiitake Parmesan
1 bunch of scallions chopped medium
1 C white wine
1/2 C Butter
16 oz of linguini
6 cloves of garlic
1/2 lemon juiced
3 tbsp. fresh parsley
1 tbsp. red pepper flakes
2 tsp. black pepper
salt to taste
1/2 pound shiitake mushrooms
1C parmesan & 1/2 C parmesan for serving

Method

Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add linguine, and cook for 9 to 13 minutes and drain.

Heat butter in a large saucepan over low heat, and saute garlic about 1 minute. Mix in wine, lemon juice, salt, and pepper.
Mix shiitake mushrooms, butter, parsley, red pepper flakes and parmesan into the saucepan. Cook 2 to 3 minutes. Stir in the cooked linguine, and continue cooking 2 minutes, until well coated. Dish and put remaining parmesan on top.

Health Pick : A Natural Chap Stick and Cold Sore Prevention

Super Lysine  is a great chap stick. I have used the strawberry product for over a year now. The strawberry and Tangerine flavors use only natural flavors. I tried this product because I was looking for a natural chap stick. It is crucial what you put on your lips because you directly digest it when your eating. I have been a fan of the Super Lysine cream that you apply to skin breaks and it works great as well.

I myself don't get cold sores but I have heard and found in research that Lysine works well with the cold sore virus. It has a SPF 21 and can easily be worn under lip stick. This is made with healing herbs and vitamins. Super Lysine is also petroleum-free. I purchased mine at a small health food store for about $3.00. The going rate online is around $6.00. This has provided fast healing relief for me as soon as I put it on.

Health Pick: Pink Ribbon Exposed!

Pink Ribbons Inc. is a documentary that shows how the pink ribbon is really being used for corporate gain instead of creating awareness. As well as for companies that are trying to improve their image, trying to look more caring. This documentary was released in June 2012. It was based on the book, Pink Ribbons Inc. Right now you can watch the documentary on Netflix. It illustrates how big companies that donate money to the "cause" have products that also contribute to cancer. A car company had multiple factory workers diagnosed with cancer. A yogurt company was caught using rGBH in their products, known to causes cancer. There is a well-known beauty company that uses cancer causing ingredients, also participate in the campaign. It is really sad that only 15% of the fundraising money goes to prevention. There is another 5% goes to environmental causes. This is a great documentary that shows different perspectives, including the research on Breast Cancer.

I have seen cancer and how much it hurts people and families. That is why it hurts me so much for something so painful and life changing to be used to make money. The money gain could be focused on prevention and not just a mention.

Health Pick: 10 Ways To Relax & Renew Your Day

  1. Pray- All the time is a good time to Pray. Let God be your counselor.
  2. Smile- Its hard to stay in a bad mood when you smile. You can brighten another persons day by smiling at them and they will usually smile back.
  3. Write- You can write everything and anything in a journal. Many use it as a form of therapy. Some write about food, lost ones, worries habits and how those habits make them feel.
  4. Pamper Yourself- This doesn't mean to go broke at a salon. A nice bath or a relaxing shower. Some rose pedals, scented candles, a special body wash or any of those bath sets you say "I will use those one day." Today is the day!
  5. Sleep- Resting and sleep are very important. Most people sleep only about 5 hours a night. With hectic schedules and those thoughts that come to mind as your head hits the pillow. Put those thoughts away and sing a lullaby if you have to. Try to keep your bedroom cool and clutter free.
  6. Learn a Skill- Find a local class to learn a new skill. Scrapbooking, sculpt, paint, draw knitting or weaving. There are many forms of art out there, my art is cooking.
  7. Quality Time- Take the time to spend with family and friends. Having a good conversation can sometimes be all that is needed to catch up. Time flies, don't loose to much time.
  8. Dance- It's ok to bust a move. Get moving and burn some calories too. Have you ever danced and watched your shadow? Its a must try and guaranteed to make you laugh.
  9. Sing- This helps a lot while driving, in traffic or just trying to calm your nerves. If your not the best singer, just turn the music up a little bit and here comes the next Voice contestant.
  10. Be Thankful- Understand how Blessed you are! The fact that you can do these things on the list. Focus on what you do have and appreciate what is sitting right in front of you. Know that you are loved by God and your never alone in this world.

Health Pick: 10 Tips for a Healthy Family

Image found at thisorthat .com

1. Bring God Into The Home – Teach your family about God. The family has to understand their spirit before they can take care of their flesh (the body). Go to the Bible. Refer to the Word when handling the ups and downs in the family. Teaching the family to walk in the way in which God would approve and pray together.

2. Educate Your Family About Healthy Eating- Teach your family about healthy choices and understanding of what is Organic, Corn Syrup (corn sugar), MSG ( monosodium glutamate) GMO's ( Genetically Modified Organisms) RBST, ( Growth Hormone in Dairy Farming.) The hormones and antibiotics in animal products. Share the benefits of cold pressed, super foods, fiber, food-based daily vitamins.

3. Plan Meals Ahead – You as the food planner are responsible for what your family is eating and their health. Save time and money by planning ahead. Before you go to the store make a list of the days of the week and plan day-by-day. Then make a separate list of things you need around the house. Pick up the household items on the same day to avoid picking up unwanted snacks. Making more trips to the store, make you more vulnerable to over buying and getting un-needed snacks. Many people go to the store hungry and thirsty, they tend to buy snacks that have little nutritional value for a quick fix. Then you get home with 10 liters of soda and try to figure out why you bought so much soda. Do “out of the box shopping” meaning fresh meats, vegetables and grains. Buy Organic, most stores carry Organic they usually are located in a separate section. If you don't see one just ask. If your area doesn't carry Organic at all just ask the manager of your local store. You can also visit your local farmers market.

4. Eat Out Less - By cooking at home you have better control of what you and your family is eating and it saves money too. The food taste better because it is fresh and more nutritious. Plan a night for the family to cook together because a family that cooks together stays together. Stay away from fast food restaurants. Many of these places have signs that say “May cause birth defects” ( I have seen these at Carls Jr.'s& Milly's). Others have sand in their meat ( Google: lab test on meat for Taco Bell). Most of the time the food is microwaved and doesn't have any nutritional value. I have been there too thinking, "oh it has lettuce and tomatoes on it, must be health right?" Wrong! After the bleaching, drying, then frozen and thrown in a box with a long travel. When it is cooked, it is tossed in a microwave or overly boiled. There is hardly, if any nutrients left.

5. Have Breakfast- I have a breakfast morning shake. (Lately, I need to do better, but we are all a work in progress. Honesty moment!) Anyways, this gets your metabolism going after the long 6 to eight hour fast while sleeping. Eating breakfast gives you a great energy boost to begin your day. I have heard of people drinking a warm cup of water or tea in the morning to get their metabolism going. ( I have not tried this consistently enough to rate it.)

6. Keep A Regular Family Schedule- Do this by eating the same time everyday. Don't skip meals . Try to eat one meal together a day to keep communication open in the family. This helps to provide structure. This gives a great opportunity to share the great things going on and the not so great things.

7. Don't Reward Your Child With Food- Never reward your child with food as a reward. They will take this with them to adulthood and the pounds. Example: Giving a child a Twinkie for being good and when they get older they equate I did good today, I deserve a Twinkie Martini. This is a dangerous and vicious cycle. This brings out the ugly definition of “comfort food.” Another thing to be watchful for yourself and for your family is eating while sad. Just eating to ease your nerves and to feel better. All it does is lead to feeling worse then you ever have before and with an extra 100 pounds.

8. Increase Family Exercise- Go out as a family, maybe invite some friends to play basketball, dodge ball, tennis, go hiking and softball. These are mostly free things and time to enjoy outside and some good Vitamin D. These activities help with confidence and team building skills. Trust building is another lesson we can learn while being in a different environment.

9. Eat Healthy Snacks And Drinks- Take and pack of healthy snacks with you. Easy take alongs: boiled eggs, nuts, fruits, cut vegetables, cheese cubes, etc. It is amazing when you watch other people from other countries, these are their snack of choice instead of: chips, cookies and everything carb. Look at the calories of the soda, juice or sports drinks. Look at how many grams of sugar ( 1 tsp = 5 grams) Also check the sodium amount. Stick to 100% juices with no added sugar. If you have to have soda, have one made with cane sugar. Remember to stay away from Corn Syrup. For every glass of soda or juice match it with a glass of water. Try to drink eight glasses of water a day. Encourage this by bringing a water jug with you and packing water with everyone in the family.

10. Family Time- Spending time together is very important, no matter the size of the family, even if its just you two. Pick a time during the day to spend time together. Find a time when all family can come together to share their day. Many families do this around the dinner table. Some choose to take this time before bed to come together to read a story to their little ones. Family game nights are a great way to come together and have fun. The time goes by so fast and everyday is an opportunity for a great memory.

Health Pick: Are You Using Apple Cider Vinegar?

Image found at freepik .com

Natural Apple Cider Vinegar is made from crushing natural organically grown apples and putting them in wooden barrels to mature. In this process, sugars are broken down by bacteria and yeast. In the first process sugars are turned into alcohol. After the alcohol ferments further, it turns into vinegar. The main ingredient in vinegar is acetic acid. Apple Cider Vinegar has been used for thousands of years for weight loss and has gained its popularity in the United States in the 1950's. It has been known to kill head lice, warts, reverse aging, ease digestion and cleanse the body of toxins. With patients that suffers from Diabetes, it has been known to reduce glucose levels, because of the chromium. It has also been found to reduce cholesterol levels and bring blood pressure to normal levels.

Natural Apple Cider Vinegar has an acidity of 5 to 7. It contains minerals that are essential to a healthy body like: potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, chlorine, sodium, sulfur, copper, iron and silicon. Apple Cider Vinegar is considered alkaline. Chemical pure vinegar is acetic acid. An eight year study was done on the effects of Apple Cider Vinegar and found that it helps with: sinus infections, acne, flu, chronic fatigue, candida, acid reflux, sore throats, arthritis, gout and food, pet and environmental allergies.

I have used Apple Cider Vinegar and found that it helps you to feel fuller faster. I would drink about a cup before meals. As a result I would eat a lot less food. I didn't do it long enough to measure the results but I noticed a big difference for it being a food suppressant. I have used it for acid re-flux and it defiantly works, we have thrown out the Pepto Bismol for good!

Health Pick: Cancer Cure?

Image found at Tootoo.com

I read about a man with Liver Cancer (Stage 4) and I wanted to share his story with all people who are: living with, know someone, or trying to prevent Cancer themselves. This man was told by his doctor that he had 3 months to live. He started drinking pure fresh Aloe Vera gel strait from the plant. He took 1 Tablespoon a day and kept his Faith, then 6 months later his Cancer was gone.

Aloe Vera has three major functions in our body. First it cleanses because of its saponins (natural cleanser) and it has enzymes and lignins that help the absorption in the skin. Second it has 200 components including: Nutrients, Minerals, Amino acids and Polysaccharides. Third it heals because of the Anthraquinones properties that helps with: Allergy, Anti Viral, Anti-Fungal and Anti Inflammatory.

Aloe Vera also helps with cell regeneration because of a hormone it has that increases new cell growth and eliminates the old one. Aloe Vera helps us from the inside out. Aloe Vera is great at detoxifying. It has been found in research to have anti cancer properties in study after study. Aloe Vera is inexpensive and has few, if any side effects.

Make sure that you get 100% Aloe Vera Juice. The FDA approved that companies can put 1 Tablespoon of Aloe Vera to one gallon of water and still call it pure. To really get pure Aloe Vera it should say on the side of the container no water added or any other additives. Another deceiving thing that companies are doing with Aloe Vera is labeling it as cold pressed (Not Heated). Companies are being allowed to still call it this when they have used HTST (High Temperature Short Time) which causes the Aloe Vera to lose some of its healing properties. Many people are just buying the Aloe Vera Barbadensis miller plant and blending it up themselves to make sure they are getting 100% Aloe Vera.

Other conditions that had personal testimonies using Aloe Vera:

Bladder Infections
IBS ( Irritable Bowl Syndrome)
Used for Bee Stings
Acid Reflux
Chronic Fatigue (Increases Energy)
Good for a Cough and coats the throat
Helps with losing weight
Improves Eyesight (prescription Reduced)
Eliminates Colon Polyps
Ulcerative Colitis

I am so mad at myself for not drinking Aloe Vera Juice sooner. I have had a huge bottle in the refrigerator that I could have been drinking this whole time. I will drink Aloe Vera juice from now on. The reason why I didn't want to drink it because it has a little bitter taste, nothing that being mixed in some fruit juice won't take away. It doesn't matter how bitter it is, I will get past it to live.

Health Pick: FDA Wants To Ban Natural Vitamin Supplements

Image found at how to make hair grow faster.com

There is a bill being proposed called the Dietary Supplement Safety Act. This bill will allow the FDA to remove natural vitamin supplement products from the market place. The FDA has already been trying to push having Vitamin B6 to be banned and be used as a pharmaceutical prescription drug to treat diabetic kidney failure.
Here is an example in money terms the prescription drug Lovaza. This is a drug that is used to treat heart patients and it is nothing more than Omega- 3 fish oil. A 30 day supply of Lovaza is $195.00. You can buy the same natural supply in stores for around $30.00.
The Natural Vitamins are becoming the pharmaceutical company's biggest competition. This means anyone paying taxes will pay 500 % more towards taxes for basic nutrients. For example Vitamin A will have some  crazy name slapped on it by a pharmacutical company and charge us $200 for a natural vitamin. Another concern with the lack of Vitamin supplements is that we will experience more common diseases that third world countries experience because lack of nutrition.
Don't loose hope when and if we see the shelves empty of vitamins. You can still get nutrients from "Super Foods." Juicing Organic Fruits and Vegetables is a great alternative. Many people don't think about it but our Organic seasonings that we have in our cabinets have vitamin properties in them as well.
Always remember that knowledge is power. The more you research; the more you learn, the more you prosper. Taking time for a little preventative care today will save you money, time and memories with the investment that you make in your health today.
