Pick of the Week: 5 Cheap Ways to Spring Clean Naturally

I have been using vinegar to clean everything around the house. I have found it to be very effective. I made this list because I wanted to share natural chemical free cleaning agents that were affordable. I also wanted to share good preventable uses that could be used all year long. It concerned me while doing research and finding out how hazardous mothballs can be. EPA has linked short-term exposure of mothballs to humans to be linked to cataracts, liver and neurological damage. Why are we still using these in our homes? We should be sharing this information with everyone we know. Happy Cleaning!

1. All Purpose Cleaner - Vinegar can clean everything. 1/2 C Vinegar and 1/2 C baking soda is good for a drain cleaner and good for a scrub paste. Wipe away mold with strait vinegar. Clean glass and mirrors with water and vinegar with newspaper. For wood use 1/4 C White Vinegar and 30 ounces of water.

2. Air Freshener- You can keep the house fresh all year long by using your favorite essential oil on cotton balls and tucking them out of sight. Keep carpets fresh with sprinkling about a cup of baking soda to deodorize.

3. Clean Closets- Clean up the clutter and donate unused items. Donate what you have not worn or don't plan to wear. You can turn your heavier cloth into cleaning rags and reuse them with cleaning them in the washer.

4. No Moth Balls- Protect your clothes with natural bug repellent with: cinnamon sticks, bay leaves and whole cloves.

5. Clean Oven- Stay away from those harsh oven cleaners and use baking soda and water and let it stand overnight and wipe clean in the morning.

Health Pick: How Much Protein Should I Have?

This is a follow up to yesterdays blog about eating less meat products for a protein source. I wanted to put a list together of other sources of protein besides meat. The first thing that comes to mind when you think of protein, is meat. There are so many food sources that provide protein.

To figure out how much protein you should get in a day, you take your weight and multiply it by .37 to see how much your daily intake should be. ( Example- 200 Lbs. x .37 = 74 grams of protein)  Protein makes up about 16 percent of our total body weight.

Getting an accurate amount of protein is essential to good health. It is especially important for those who are pregnant. An important thing to remember is the amount of protein in food changes when something is cooked. ( Example- the reduction of spinach when it is cooked. )

My favorite source of protein is Spirulina and it has 3 to 4 times more protein than beef and fish. Below is a comparison list of meat and plant based foods and their protein content.

Amount of Protein in Meat

8oz Steak - 45g protein

8oz Chicken Breast- 42g protein

8oz Whole Milk- 10g protein

8oz Salmon - 45g protein

8oz Pork Chop - 55g protein

Amount of Protein in Plant Based Foods

1 cup Quinoa - 18g protein

1 cup Kidney Beans - 13g protein

1 cup Tofu - 20g protein

1 cup Soy Milk - 7g protein

1 cup Peas - 16g protein

1 cup Corn - 5g protein

1 cup Broccoli - 3g protein

1 cup Chickpeas - 14g protein

1 cup Avocado- 4g protein

Foodie Pick: Forks Over Knives Movie Review

http://www.forksoverknives.com

My husband and I recently watched Forks over Knives on Netflix. My husband also borrowed the movie from a friend, where I watched the bonus features. The movie details how food can be used as a medicine. The benefits can reverse conditions like Heart Disease, Type 2 Diabetes and different Cancers.

The movie follows a biochemist and a surgeon that were raised on a farm from an early age. This  shares their discoveries and individual studies. There is also a look into the life of patients struggling with chronic conditions. The patients go on the plant based diet and it changes their lives dramatically. This shares the benefits of plant based diets and how it can be used for prevention.

In the bonus features of the DVD, it shares how there are a lot of tax dollars that are used for dairy. Starting with the Drink Milk ads (with those celebrities, very pricey). To how fast food is being persuaded to add cheese and promote cheese items more. There is a big difference in the cheese that you buy without hormones and at cheese shops. The cheese used in fast food along with the cheese you can buy in a box is very processed. It has been found that some of this processed cheese is one molecule away from plastic.

I appreciate that the film makers brought awareness to the research that was found about meat products. I would have liked to seen more touched on about hormones, processed foods and how food is limited. Especially if you are going to do the plant based diet to stay away from genetically modified everything and to stick to organic; to receive full health benefits.  Again, I myself am a Clean Eater, which means I eat organic without hormones and pesticides.  I especially love cheese; so much that I have invented an invisible mouse that eats the cheese in my house. This movie did make me ask the question of, "Why are meat products pushed and promoted so much?" I do plan to reduce the amount of meat products that my family consumes and buy even more plant based foods.

Baby Pick: Starting The Baby Early With The Bible

Since the fetus can start hearing as early as 18 weeks, many pregnant mothers within the recent years have been promoting playing Baby Einstein and lullabies via headphones softly on their belly.

My husband and I decided not only to play classical music at night; during the day I've also been playing the Bible, the King James Version. I have a Bible app on my phone, where I play the Bible. I plug in the headphones and softly play it throughout the week. I have been playing the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke & John in rotation.

It was very important to my husband and I that our baby gets introduced to the Bible at a very early age. Playing the Bible gives the baby a head start and lets her start to recognize the Bible like she would the voices of her parents.
