Foodie Pick: Cut Calories By Using Yogurt!

www.traderjoes.com

I recently started eating a lot of yogurt. I only buy organic yogurt because it has all the probiotic properties. The calorie comparison is a lot with yogurt having 9 calories a tablespoon, versus 99 for regular mayonnaise and 30 for sour cream.

A while ago I accidently put yogurt on my chili dogs instead of sour cream and didn't notice a difference. It was still very good. I have replaced yogurt for mayonnaise, since I am not much of a mayonnaise fan.

A good replacement for sour cream is a tangy Greek yogurt. The Greek yogurt has a creamy texture. This is a great low calorie replacement. When cooking with yogurt, you have to be careful with the temperature and cook at a low heat. The yogurt can be added to the end, when the dish is finished cooking.

Another good use for yogurt is for baking. If you would like to cut the fat in half; use half of the butter or oil and put the other half with yogurt that the recipe calls for. Milk and water in a recipe can be replaced with 1/4 of the liquid with yogurt, this adds more flavor and texture. Buttermilk can also be substituted with yogurt. It is also great to use as a base for a favorite dip.

For a low calorie desert, plain yogurt can be sweetened up with honey, vanilla and or with fresh fruit. This saves a lot of unnecessary sugar that is already in sweetened yogurt.
